Chapter 13 A bottle of wine
As the weeks went by, Bruno became more and more aware that in the foreseeable future, he would not be able to return to his home in Berlin, slide down the stairs from his comfortable home and see Carl Daniel Martin.
However, as time went by, he gradually got used to going together, and he no longer felt unhappy about his new life. After all, he was no longer without someone to talk to. Every day after lunch, Bruno would walk a long way along the wire and then sit down with his new friend himl to chat until he came home, which made up for his lost good time in Berlin.
One afternoon, while he was in the kitchen filling his pockets with bread and cheese, Maria went into the kitchen and stopped to look at him.
Hello, Bruno said he tried to act as if nothing had happened. You startled me. I didn’t hear you come in.
Have you eaten again? Maria asked with a smile, have you already had lunch? You are still hungry.
At one o’clock Bruno said I was going for a walk, so I wanted to take something to eat on the way.
Maria shrugged her shoulders and went to the stove. She put a pot of water next to the stove. There were a bunch of potatoes and carrots waiting for Pavel to peel them in the afternoon. When Bruno was about to leave, he saw these vegetables flashing a question that often bothered him. He had never asked anyone before, but now is a very good time and a very suitable person.
Maria, he said, can I ask you a question?
The maid turned around and looked at him in surprise. Of course, Master Bruno said.
I asked you, and you swore not to tell anyone that I asked you, okay?
She squinted hesitantly, but nodded. What do you want to know?
Yu Pavel Bruno said you knew him, didn’t you? He was the one who came here to peel vegetables at the dinner table.
Oh, it’s Maria who said with a smile that her voice sounded relaxed. It’s nothing serious like this. I know Pavel, we often talk. Why do you ask him?
Well, Bruno said what he said carefully for fear that he shouldn’t talk. After we came here, I made a swing in the oak tree and fell off the surface and hurt my knee. Do you remember?
Maria said it didn’t hurt you anymore, did it?
No, that’s not the problem. Bruno said Pavel was the only adult at home when I was injured. He brought me here to clean the wound and applied a green potion, which hurt a little, but I thought it would make the wound better. Then he put a bandage on me.
Anyone would have such a wound, Maria said
I know he went on to say that it was at that time that he told me that he was not an attendant at all.
Maria’s face froze and was silent for a moment. On the contrary, she looked away, licked her lips and nodded. I know. Did she say that he said his true identity?
He said he used to be a doctor. Bruno said it didn’t sound true at all. He wasn’t a doctor, was he?
No, Maria said shake your head. He is not a doctor, he is an attendant.
I knew Bruno said he was happy, so it didn’t make sense for him to lie to me
Pavel is no longer a doctor, Bruno Maria said calmly, but he was in another life before he came here.
Bruno frowned and thought about it. I’m not white, he said
We hardly know what Maria said
But he used to be a doctor, so what is not now?
Maria sighed and looked out of the window to make sure that no one had come, and then nodded to the chair to signal the two of them to sit down.
I told you Pavel’s life experience before, and she said that you can’t tell others whether you are white or we will all be in trouble.
I won’t tell anyone that Bruno said that he listened to some secret things and generally kept his mouth shut and almost never spread them, except when he had no choice.
